Ekushe Television, popularly known as ETV, country's first private TV channel launched about 16 months ago, wants to establish itself as an "Entertainment medium" for backward masses of rural Bangladesh.

Explaining the aims and objective as well as potentiality of the private TV channel, its Chairman Mr. Abu Sayed Mahmud, a media personality, told the New Nation the ETV will discharge its duty as an auxiliary force to create social awareness of the broad masses to help ensure their basic like education, healthcare, nutrition and sanitation.

The ETV chairman, with rich print media background, said "our efforts aim at projecting life style, joys and sorrows, happiness and distress integrating rural masses. There is no alternative to a powerful electronic media to carry forward our vision in this regard," he said.

Attaching importance of a private television channel for national economic uplift, Mr. Abu Sayed who was Managing Director of the Daily Star said such a TV channel as ETV can play a pivotal role in improving standard of living of the masses.

He said we are marching forward keeping our slogan" Commitment to bring about a Change" ahead right from the beginning.

He said majority of ETV viewers are rural people and "we want to do something a new for them."

Responding to a question about popular "Mukta Khabor" programme aired by ETV for children, he said specially trained children who collect reports and telecast those by themselves mostly hail from mofussil areas and this programme gained popularity within short span of time.

Justifying exigency of a TV channel like the ETV in the new millennium, Mr. Abu Sayed said "we are to face new challenges and a private TV channel is very much helpful to face those" in a poverty-ridden country like ours.

He expressed his firm belief that "we would be able to go a long way provided we can utilise the electronic media against illiteracy and ignorance.
