About the Theater

The presence of festivities in Bangladesh is all embracing and as old as time. The history of drama and its performance is very old. Before Independence, during the administration of many regimes. It has traversed paths of glory. Although it was never smooth and had to face many adverse circumstances. Our dedicated performers and all who are connected with performing arts, have shouldered the great responsibility of taking this type of arts with the application of modern tecnics in the field of patronization, staging, with a to reaching the common people, in the post-independence period. In short, it may very well be said that drama is the outcome of our tradition and our drama is our pride. Without the existence of any stage worth its name in Bangladesh dramatists have, during the last 25 years, produced and staged many dramas of high quality. The news of our achievements in drama has reached world, crossing the boundaries of Bangladesh. (more..)

Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT) was the first, and is still the only, professional theatre organisation in Bangladesh. CAT was established in 1994. The activities are partly funded through donor support and partly through incomes from advertisements, registration fees for participation in workshops and seminars, and from selling of tickets and publications. Society ought to be adequately compassionate for the sake of its equilibrium and integrity. A humanitarian approach helps the society to cure and eradicate its evils. What theatre does is an vibrant exposure of what society should do and should not more explicitly than any other genre of a culture. Theatre is a media that speaks unequivocally to any of its audience offering an easy access to the issue in question. Bangladeshi theatre has, of late, made a remarkable progression by good many productions having high theatrical value and appeals, and have accordingly been acclaimed both at home and abroad. A THEATRE SHOW for young people about sexual and reproductive health is touring Bangladesh. The show is part of an initiative by the Family Planning Association of Bangladesh (FPAB) in collaboration with local theatre groups to spread information on sexual and reproductive health. Since December 1997, over 50 street shows have been staged in nine districts. And the theatre groups organizing the shows are convinced that their efforts are helping youths change their attitudes towards
adolescent sex and reproductive health needs.(more..)

Nawab SirajuddaulahEast Bengal continued the folk jatra and used this form for themes concerning current political problems and historical events. A successful example of the latter is Nawab Sirajuddaulah, which deals with the fall of the last Muslim ruler of Bengal in 1757 through betrayal by his ambitious brother-in-law Mir Ja'far, who joined the British. This jatra is popular with both rural and urban audiences. Tales of Muslim kings and lovers from Persian legends also have been rendered into jatras. (more..)
