Kanjus makes history
Lok Natyadal's production Kanjus' 400th stage presentation Friday

If you are asked which is the most staged play in theatre history of Bangladesh you will probably give a vacant look for a while and then express your inability. But what will surprise you most when you will hear the name of the play and to learn it is a comedy.

Kanjus or Miser, an adaptation of L' Avare by French playwright Moliere, is the most staged play in Bangladesh and the play completes its 400th stage show on September 21 at Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium, Shahbagh at 7 in the evening.

Kanjus is a production of Loko Natyadal, a front-ranking theatre group of the country.

In 1988 Kanjus was first staged in the city. In 1993 Kanjus completed its 100th stage presentation. The next 100 stage presentations were done in record one year time to make it 200 in 1994. In 1993 Kanjus was awarded Best Production prize at the International Theatre Olympiad held in Delhi, this was also the year Lok Natyadal staged the play for the 300th time.

Adapted by Tarik Anam Khan and directed by Liakat Ali Kucky, Kanjus has also been staged internationally including Chandigar, Rabindra Bharati Biswabidyalaya, Hong Kong and London.
