| It's the only on-air western pop-music programme in Bangladesh, and
it been so for almost three decades now. It is the only regular English programme hosted
by Bangladesh Betar, Dhaka everyday and has turned out many famous names which have moved
on to greener pastures in the field of broadcasting.
"World Music", the lone English
programme, from the national radio station, which celebrates its 29th anniversary, has
always been a spot for talented youth with a following of its own. The hour-long edition
of western music was initially broadcast twice a day in two separate plots after it
started, moving later on to its current slot of one hour.
Its has different shows for each day of the
week at present has such programmes as Yesterday Once More on Sundays, Your Choice on
Fridays, The Single Artist Show on Thursdays and Music around the World on the other days.
Today the programmes hosted by "World
Music" it has its own cult following among the young people and also boasts of its
own fan club which meets regularly and invites the comperes and celebrates different
events.
The fire was started by Md Muzakkar back in 1972 and
that torch is still being carried on today by a group of dedicated music lovers, who have
kept the fire burning even under many adverse and tight conditions of the programme.
In its initial stages, "World Music"
programmes was hosted by such names as Tamara Rahman, Md Ali, Yasmin Mahmud, Mita
Chowdhury, Yasmin Mariam, Rezwana Kabir, Zahidul Kabir, Imran Mahmud, Shameem Ahmed,
Ashraful Khan, Nafees Imtiaz, Zain Khan, Azal H Khan, Anwarul Azam, Mabria Lokman, Faria
Rahman, Haider Ali, Raihan-e-Khuda and Shama-e-Khuda. Come the eighties and younger people
came to take over the task of bringing pop music to its many fans. Comperes in the
eighties included Subarna Mustafa, Mahmudur Rahman, Munmun Ahmed, Nadera Sultana, Sadia D
Parveen, Anwarul Azam, Deeba Wahid, Fuad Shihab, Khalid Raja, Kamal Hossain, Jalal Ahmed,
Azra Selim, Sadia Nishaat, Saifullah Khan Tayon, Jui, Jinia, Yasmeen Idris, Adnan
Chowdhury, Amer Farid, Javed Rahman, Nobar Faruk and many more.
Many of these young people went on to become
well-known in their own rights in different arenas. But most of these young people have
branches on other venues of broadcasting, mostly in English newscasting on the national
television. Afzal H Khan, Mahmudur Rahman, Shameem Ahmed, Ahraful Khan and some others
have become well known newscasters of the country while Shuborna Mustafa has made quite a
name for herself in the field of acting.
In the nineties a fresh bunch of young people have
come into the show some of whom are still working dedicatedly to better the show and make
it more popular. Today girls outnumber the boys as comperes of the show and they include
Shaila, Saima, Nudrat Tensin, Yvvone, Shawon, Nipun, Ibne Shahrier, Shahrier Mowla,
Anahita, Muneera, Shazia, Suzanna, Saima Annie and some others.
