The Meril-Prothom Alo Star Survey Awards 2000 ceremony held at Hotel Sheraton crowns people's choice of the most popular cultural performers of the year By the time the last of the guests arrived at the Winter Garden of Hotel Sheraton there was hardly enough place left to seat them, and the programme, had began, as promised, on time.

Editor of the daily Motiur Rahman, welcomed the guests and thanked everyone of the newspaper's readers who had filled in the coupons to vote for their choice of the years most popular stars. The final winners were decided by a board of jury from amidst the three finalists.

Next came on stage Anjan Chowdhury of Square Toiletries Limited. He welcomed all the guests and said that his house, one of the oldest business associations in the country, was proud to be part of this unique award ceremony decided through the votes of the people, as it was always eager to help the development of the cultural field in the country.

Popular TV actor and renowned advertisement maker Afzal Hossain, who has gained a new popularity with his old fans as a compere of different shows in recent years was here once again to present the popular awards to the winners. He opened the show with the introduction of a pantomime group from Chittagong Natuwa Nirbak Shampraday which presented an enchanting piece to the back ground of elecronic beats.

Afzal then called on renowned singer and Nazrul Geeti exponent Nilufar Yasmin to hand over the Best Singer Award (Male). The first winner of the evening was thus popular singer Andrew Kishore in recent years has regained his popularity among the masses after years of self-exile from music. The Best Singer Award (Female) went to Konokchampa.

Before the announcement of awards for best models, Afzal Hossain, himself the maker of many popular TV advertisements, reminded everyone of the contribution of everyone -- working behind the scene in the making of an advertisement -- that went to make an advertisement popular, and suggested that a category be also opened for their recognition as well. Dance exponent and cultural activist Laila Hasan stood up to add that the dance artists were also being deprived from an honour in this case.

Best TV Magazine Programme  IttaydiModel Nobel won the award for best male model followed by Sadia Islam Mou who won the award for Best Female Model for the third consecutive year running. This was the just the beginning of the veteran winners of the Meril-Prothom Alo title because the next award for Best TV Magazine Programme was won, very predictably, by Hanif Shonket for his unbeatable presentation of Ittaydi. Hanif Shonket also bagged the award in the last two years that it was given out.

The Best Band Award went to LRB, which also won the title for the third year running.

Before the Awards for the Best Cinema Actor and Actress came a very delightful break in the form of the presentation of the popular film song "Shob Shokhiray par koritay..... " from the hit film Sujon-Sakhi. Nobel started lip-singing to this with the help of young film actress Purnima, very much a picture of the new generation youngsters enjoying a moment with the popular song from the seventies. The lights on the stage went out in the midst of this performance dawning the performers in darkness to light up again only to reveal non other than Kabari and Faruk - the original couplet in the hit film- performing the song. The much delighted audience greeted them with loud cheers and clapping.

The Best Cinema Actor Award went to Manna while Shabnoor bagged the Best Cinema Actress Award.

The more eagerly awaited announcements was for the popular TV actors' and this came after a delightful dance performed by model Mou who was accompanied by a group of younger dancers. The song selected for this performance was a Nazrul Geeti "Ami Roop Nagarer Rajkonya'.

Zahid Hasan, whose wife Mou had only minutes earlier won the award for best model made it even by topping the people's vote bagging The Best TV Actor Award. The Best TV Actress Award went to Shomi Kaiser but host Afzal Hossain, instead of asking Shomi's reaction stopped her for a moment and rushed down to where Bipasha Hayat was sitting among the audience (Bipasha was among those shortlisted for the award) and asked her for her reactions instead. This set the audience roaring with laughter but a much amused Bipasha very elegantly said that she was delighted that Shomi had won the award who must have deserved it more as the people's voting had decided.

The Critics awards went to Mostafa Sarwar Faruki (best TV director), Masum Reza (best TV dramatist), Masun Aziz ( best TV actor) and Tarana Halim(best Tv actress)

The evening was not only delightful because as Afzal Hossain kept on reminding everyone through the show that they had tried to do something different for the night but also because of the very disciplined audience. May of whom had also remembered to keep their mobile phones turned off during the programme.

Another relief was that the apprehension, that none really talked about, but weighed heavy on everyone's mind, of the recent incidents of attacks on cultural programmes, had come to nothing.

It was thus really a happy ending to return from the show with nothing but memories of a pleasant ceremony.
