Although Ray came in for a lot of flak for having taken on a “matinee idol” for this film, in the form of Uttam Kumar, some fans believe this choice was perfect, in view of the script. After all Uttam was a reigning superstar of the Bengali film industry at this point, and himself known as the “mahanayak” or great hero, making him perfect for the role of a star who is forced, by circumstances, to re-examine his life. The role was assayed to perfection by Uttam and even led to some questioning about whether it had elements from his own life! The basic premise of the film is simple. A reigning star of the film industry is faced with his first flop, a messy affair, and a public scandal. In the midst of this mess, he must travel, by train (horror of horrors!!!) to Delhi to receive an award. The journey, the people he meets during it, specifically a smart young woman journalist, force him to come face to face with his true self, and to re-examine his life. In true, inimitable Ray style, the journey itself becomes a metaphor for the star’s delving into his own past, and the gradual arrival at a better understanding, and some semblance of peace.
