Pride, the inability to change with the times, false vanity, and the inevitable destructive effect of time; Jalsaghar is a masterful tragedy of all these elements, combined with the hammertia of one man who is unable to face reality and prefers to live in the pat…. to the very end. It is a common enough situation, made uncommonly poignant by the acting and direction of some of the stalwarts of Bengali cinema. Chhabi Biswas is inimitable as a Landowner fallen on inclement days and yet unable to forget or give up the pomp and glory of his forebears. Unable to accept a reality and a present where the river is eating away at his lands, and daily life depleting the remains of the family exchequer, he clings desperately to the past full of musical extravaganza in the “music room.” The greatness of Ray’s genius lies in the subtle but unpartisan examination of this man’s psyche. His inability to give up his false vanity even after he has lost everything…his family, and all his money; his hate for the nouveau riche neighbor who now tries to act the way he has seen the Zamindars, or landowners act, all his life; to the ultimate desperate act of holding one more “true” musical event in the Jalsaghar, at the expense of his last few sovereigns. A subtle study of the gray shades of human character.
