Although a recipient of many awards in India, including the president’s gold and silver medals for 1970, the film did not do too well outside of Bengal. One of the reasons could be that the film, although a sublime comedy, is full of little nuances and tricks of the language that do not translate well. As a result, a non-bangla-speaking audience, who sees the film mainly through subtitles, would miss out on most of the humor, and be left with just another fairy tale. The basic story, penned by Ray’s grandfather, tells of a couple of village hicks, with no talent but much love for music, who strike it big after they are blessed with 3 boons by the king of ghosts. For an international audience, used to the depth and the serious tones of most Ray films, this lighthearted comedy may have seemed uncharacteristic. However, to a true Ray connoisseur, GGBB illustrates another side of Ray’s filmmaking. The wild, flamboyant, over the top creativity in this film, is a testament to a great artist. The “almost seven minute long” sequence of the dance of the ghosts is one of the best examples of experimental filming in international cinema, and a must see for any student of film studies. In addition, the outlandish characters and the fairy tale setting are enough to make the “inner child” in anyone sit up and take notice.
