Director: Rituparno Ghosh Made: 2006 Writer: Screenplay by Rituporno Ghosh based on “Dosar” by Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay Genre: Drama/Psychological study
Cast: Prasenjit Chatterjee ... Kaushik Chatterjee Konkona Sen Sharma ... Kaberi Chatterjee Chandrayee Ghosh ... Mita Roy Shankar Chakraborty ... Biswas Roy And others Dosar is a film “about” infidelity. In the director’s own words, it is not a film “on” marital infidelity, not about the extramarital relationship at all. It is a study of the effects of infidelity, and the repercussions of it in a crumbling marriage. When a 30 something woman finds out, unexpectedly, that her husband has been having a relationship with someone else, she is faced with some very tough choices and decisions. She must not only face up to, and deal with the fact of the infidelity itself, and all the associated emotional upheavals, she must also face up to the effect this will have on her marriage, and decide where he goes from here. Added to this are the long-term loyalty and the caring she still feels for her husband, especially now that he is hurt and recovering from an accident. This is acknowledged to be probably the best work that Konkona Sen Sharma has done. The maturity, the strength and the understated yet very real emotional turmoil of the character is superbly assayed by her. Prasenjit, as Kaushik, has also done some really good work, reaffirming his acting prowess. The situation is one that could easily happen to any one of us, and the struggles of the protagonists, hers…with anger and pain, and his with physical agony as well as guilt, grief and confusion, are handled very well by the actors as well as the director. Unusually for Rituporno, and the modern cinema, the film is in black and white, which adds an extra dimension to the effect. Not only does it focus the attention of the audience, by cutting out a lot of the clutter that a colored film can bring (with too many details that stand out), it also very elegantly adds to the understanding of all the shades of gray that make up a human mind and life.
