One of the better-known Ray films internationally, Aranyer Din Ratri, or “days and nights in the forest” is heavily influences by French cinema around the time of Jean Renoir. It starts out being a lighthearted comedy about a group of “city boys” from Calcutta who decide to take a holiday at a small village/forest in Bihar. Towards the first half, the supreme overconfidence, and the city-bred arrogance, of the four friends, lands them in all kinds of misadventures. However, the film soon builds up to a more serious tone as each of the men begins to discover more about life and love, trough their stay and the incidents during it. As they meet, interact with, and become attracted to certain women, two of them from the city and one a local tribal girl, the film gets into serious examination of the intricacies of the relationships between the sexes. From the purely physical encounter, leaving the protagonists unfulfilled and unsatisfied, to the depths and soul enriching heights that real love can reach, the film examines the chemistry between men and women. But more than anything, this film is one of the most competent “rite of passage” films, examining the self- realization and the growth and changes faced by the friends. Even apart from the subtle sexual tension and superb editing and filming of the famous “picnic scene” the entire film upholds Ray’s claim to fame as one of the greatest filmmakers of our times.
