weaving of colorful "check" fabric is a traditional Bangladeshi craft. The 100%
cotton yarn is dyed before weaving, making the fabric look beautiful and 100% colour fast.
It comes in literally millions of colour combinations ranging from subtle pestal colours
to the bright ones. SIDE identified a huge unutilised export potential for this truly
magnificient cloth. Today, the Grameen Check employs 200,000 share-holder handloom
weavers, and exports to the USA, UK, Europe and Japan. It is looking for the market in
Australia. In February 1996, an exclusive fashion-show and exhibition was held in Paris to
promote the Grameen Check and other cotton and silk fabrics produced by the borrowers of
the Grameen Bank. |
 Grameen Check is the brand name
under which handloom fabrics made in Bangladesh are being globally marketed by Grameen
Uddog, an enterprise set up by Grameen Bank. Primarily, chequered fabric made with one
hundred percent cotton yarn of very high quality, are currently being produced on the
traditional handlooms. In 1994-95 alone, 4 million metres of Grameen Check were produced
and exported. Production is expected to more than double in 1995-96.Cotton yarn for Grameen Check is hand dyed according to the specifications of the buyers using the traditional vat process which yields very bright and fast colours. The village weavers of Bangladesh can produce almost any design and reproduce any shade of colour. Already hundreds of design samples have been produced and these have been well received by the fashion conscious buyers of West Europe and North America. They have been displayed at a number of textile and apparel fairs in Europe, Asia and North America. Many, many varieties of Grameen Check are now available in a dazzling combination of colours. The hand-woven checks are light and comfortable to wear. They are ideal as Spring and Summer wear for men, women and chidren. |
| Grameen Check is custom made.
The colour, the thread count, the design and construction of the fabric vary according to
specifications and preferences of buyers. It is available in 110 X 110, 80 X 70, 72 X 68,
70 X 64, and 60 X 50 construction, made with 70, 60, 40,20 & 10 counts of yarn. The
fabric has already been laboratory tested and is considered to be colour fast with a
shrinkage limit of only 3 to 5 percent. In addition to cotton fabrics for Summer wear, Grameen Uddog also produces flannel for the Winter as well as dobbie for home furnishing. |
